What is edge computing?

What is Edge Computing?

It’s the practice of processing and analysing data closer to the user location. This means, all the data creation and storage happen where the data is generated, which then eliminates the need to transmit the data to a main data-processing warehouse. 

Edge devices (such as your smart watch, and the computers that analyse four-way crossings and traffic flow) need to store and process data locally so that they can generate and share timely insight, and execute necessary commands without much of your effort.

This can allow raw data to be processed locally, secure sensitive data before sending it to cloud or another primary data centre, which may be located in other legal jurisdictions.

Autonomy

Edge computing is useful where connectivity is unreliable or bandwidth is restricted because of the place’s environmental characteristics. Examples can include oilrigs, ships at sea, remote farms (such as a rainforest).

By processing it locally, the amount of data to be transmitted can be greatly reduced. This requires far less bandwidth, connectivity time and improves productivity.
